Born and bred in Western Australia, 27-year-old Southern began his football career with Claremont before being drafted to the Western Bulldogs in 1992 and very quickly became a valued & respected member of the club.
Although something of a fitness fanatic, he struggled with leg injuries throughout his time at the Whitten Oval. An old-fashioned defender, Southern was involved in several controversial incidents during his career and made several memorable tribunal appearances.
Knee and hamstring injuries ultimately cut short his time in footy, and he hung up his boots after 103 games and several finals campaigns.
He has remained involved in top-level footy through media work, but in the off-season he continues to travel the world, especially Africa, pursuing his passion for photographing wildlife.
